by William Shakespeare
KPPL will co-produce First Encounters: Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, in partnership with The Royal Shakespeare Company. Originally produced by the Donmar Warehouse, Phyllida Lloyd’s ground breaking all-female production returns with Olivier Award-winning actress Harriet Walter reprising her acclaimed role as Brutus.
From the back of a prison van, Ancient Rome is brought vividly to life as a group of female prisoners stage a powerful 90-minute version of Julius Caesar, reflecting their own preoccupations with freedom, justice and power. As Caesar’s dominance threatens democracy and a group of conspirators turn to Brutus to reclaim the republic, Shakespeare’s politically charged play reveals how the violent overthrow of a tyrant rarely leads to peace. Hailed as “one of the most important theatrical events of the past twenty years” (The Observer), this landmark production remains a defining moment in contemporary theatre.
This new touring production will bring world-class theatre directly into secondary schools and communities across England, with the tour visiting schools in Peterborough, Newquay, Bradford, Nottingham and Blackpool, before performances at The Other Place. Alongside the tour, a programme of workshops, in-conversation events and post-show discussions will invite young people to respond creatively to the play’s themes and consider how questions of justice, leadership and civic responsibility resonate in the world today
